If you are interested in working on big construction projects, roading, surveying, electriciy generation and supply and telecommunications, Connexis is the ITO that can help your career get started. Infrastructure skills and knowledge are very much part of New Zealand’s future.
Connexis wants to be the “ITO of choice” for employers in infrastructure. Infrastructure is a changing industry. Employers want skilled workers and workers need skills to work. Developing people that have what it takes requires industry-relevant theory and real world practice.
You can get into the industry directly from school
It’s possible to get a job in the infrastructure industry direct from school. Consider contacting local companies directly and if they aren’t hiring, ask them to register your interest in any upcoming vacancies. Or search the vacancies which companies linked to Connexis have listed on their site.
Typically, the types of positions open to school leavers include:
- Office juniors and administration
- Call centre operators
- Civil workers - labouring, digging trenches etc
- Apprentices or trainees - electricians, telecommunication technicians, operators, line mechanics, cable jointers, electrical fitters, mechanical fitters
Requirements for these positions vary, but most employers will prefer you to have completed year 12 or equivalent.
Connexis Gateway Programme
One way to get into the industry direct from school is to complete the Connexis Gateway Programme with a work placement at a local company. During the programme, you will complete unit standards that are relevant to the industry. To find out more about the Gateway Programme, contact your school’s Gateway Coordinator or see the Gateway page on the Connexis website.
Getting a part-time job or work experience at the local company you’re interested in will also improve your chances of a permanent job. You’ll need to contact companies directly to see if they have any opportunities to work with them.
