Scholarships, grants and awards for Māori students
Education and training is a priority for Māori and as a result there are many scholarships, grants and awards available for Māori students.
These cover virtually every course and institution around the country, so it makes huge sense to do some research to find what you may be entitled to apply for.
These can range from scholarships related to the iwi/hapu you are descended from to the course of study you are interested in An example of these are the many scholarships available to health students through the Kia Ora Hauora organisation.
Work with your school careers guidance teachers and discuss your plans with your school Māori advisor if you have one. Contact the student support services or the Māori liaison at universities or polytechnics you're interested in and register your interest with them. Make contact with iwi organisations or look at their websites to see if their scholarships apply to you. If in doubt, call them up and chat.
Each year many of these scholarships and grants just don’t get applied for and so no money is given out. These are there to help you, so for the sake of some research and time, you might just find your money worries could well be eased.
