Careers Expo can help you on your way

Careers Expo can help you on your way

Still not sure just what you want to do when you leave school? Maybe your answer or path can be found at one of the 2016 Careers Expos planned in Christchurch, Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington through May and June.

The Careers Expo brings together a wide range of tertiary education and training providers, along with a growing range of industry groups and individual businesses. Why are they there? To talk to you, to interest you in their institution or business and hopefully to get you thinking about taking their path when you check out of school.

Attending a Careers Expo will give you a great chance to look a little deeper into the many options you have. Most of the universities will have a stand, as will the polytechnics and Industry Training Organisations. All up around 60 organisations will be lining up to grab your attention and your ear, filling your bags with prospectuses, brochures, pens and other merchandise.

A highlight of last year’s Career Expo was the World of Work Hub. This interactive display is staffed by experts and helps you find out what employers are looking for, job prospects in the future, how to prepare a CV and more. There is lots of video content from New Zealand employers and industry bodies such as the useful Just the Job DVD presentations, along with actual demonstrations to bring these jobs to life for you.

A number of Industry Training Organisations combine at the Career Expo to present the successful ‘Got a Trade – Got it Made’ display hub, highlighting the opportunities and advantages of earning while you are doing your learning. As well as showcasing many trade career options, these experts can offer tips and advice if you are looking to get into a trade apprenticeship.

It costs nothing to attend any of the four Careers Expos coming up. Check with your school’s careers advisers whether they can take a group along. If you are not able to go along as part of a school group, maybe you could go with some mates or even with your parents as each venue has one weekend day scheduled.
