Massey is as close as we come to a national university in NZ, with the university having three distinct campuses at Albany (Auckland’s North Shore), Manawatu (Palmerston North) and in the heart of Wellington City. These three campuses cater for more than 16,000 students, while almost as many students are studying at Massey via their long-standing Distance Learning programme.
The three campuses have differing strengths and course mixes. The Manawatu Campus, home to 45% of the Massey student body, is where the university began. Among the more than 150 programmes offered are the core agricultural, life science, veterinary teaching and research, business and social science programmes which Massey is known best for.
The Albany Campus houses approx 35% of Massey’s students. The modern campus offers over 70 different majors for new students, these including traditional humanities and science programmes, business and finance courses (the highest rated such accounting and finance courses in NZ) as well as innovative programmes as Mathematics & Information Science and even Jazz.
Massey’s Wellington Campus is referred to as the creative campus, home to the country’s oldest and most prestigious School of Design, while other Wellington programmes include Communications, Health and Wellbeing and Creative Arts. Wellington is home base for almost 20% of Massey’s student numbers.
Accommodation options in Auckland, Palmerston North and Wellington
All three campuses offer you a variety of on campus accommodation options, including Halls of Residence, Residential Complexes, Apartments, Units and Homestays. These are managed or supervised by Massey University.
At Albany, three Halls of Residence are available, each accommodating 70 residents in single rooms over three floors. This environment provides you with a great balance between study and social life, and is an ideal starting point if you are moving away from home for the first time.
Residential Assistants also live within the halls community to provide on-campus support after hours. The campus also has apartment accommodation options for older students.
Massey Manawatu offers a wide range of on-campus Halls and Units, catering for over 900 students of diverse ages, programmes of study, and cultural backgrounds. All Halls have access to the same resources and level of support. Halls and Units are either catered (where at least one meal is provided daily), or self-catered (where you are expected to purchase and prepare your own food). Massey Manawatu’s halls are priced to meet a range of budgets, with prices factored on the meal plan, the size of the room, and the age of the hall.
In Wellington the main accommodation option is The Cube, a modern central city facility with 86 self-catered shared apartments with a choice of five-bedroom, three-bedroom or studio units. Another new option is 222 Willis, a new student accommodation hall situated about 15 minutes’ walk from the campus.
Agriculture among Massey’s world-ranked programmes
Massey’s agriculture programmes are rated with the best globally (19th worldwide according to the latest QS rankings), while the univerity had four other subjects ranked in the world’s elite. The accounting and finance programme, as well as education, placed in the top 100. Massey’s psychology and operations and statistics programmes were ranked in the world’s top 150. The strength of the agriculture programmes in Palmerston North has seen many leading food-based industries move to and start operating near the city to take advantage of the research and smart thinking that the programmes generate.
Massey describe their university as the engine room of the new New Zealand. It’s not just a catchy slogan but it reflects the relevance of many of its courses to the future wellbeing of the country.
